My father was born in Hanoi so it was always a dream to travel there with my daughter. Reviews kept singing the praises of Indochina Voyages and for good reason.
Linh Chu helped orchestrate a dream trip for us. We must have exchanged 100 emails. At one point, we didn’t think we would be able to go. Linh gracefully stepped back, no hard feelings, simply resumed when we were back on board. Initially, I was nervous about the safety of my 20-year-old daughter and I in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. However, with the luxury of private drivers and English speaking tour guides, it was like having a friend show us about town. Once we learned the art of crossing the street 🙂 we felt comfortable planning things with our free time. Linh was always a text or a What’s App away for advice about the Water Puppets Show near our hotel, a massage by the visually impaired, The Bamboo Circus, making scarves at the textile studio. This was in addition to the “customized” itinerary: Angkor Wat, the Elephant Sanctuary, Doi Suthep, War Remnants Museum, the Mekong Delta, The Bridge Over River Kwai, the cooking class, places we never would go to privately. We brainstormed about what I envisioned on the trip, Linh chose hotels that were centrally located, stayed within our budget, and what evolved was a truly flawless experience. We were even treated to a fireworks show on New Year’s Eve at our riverfront hotel. We laughed, we cried, did Tai Chai on the beautiful V’spirit Cruise on Lan Ha Bay. By choice, we did 5 domestic flights, 12 plane rides in all in 18 days, no snafus, nothing was left to chance.
Indochina Voyages is a top-notch company to be sure, but the ripple effect will stay with me always. Every driver, every tour guide was cheerful, courteous, professional and did so much to make sure we had a good time. It started with Quan in Hanoi-such a hoot. Does everyone take Photography? Great pictures, great personality. Saw the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the night food tour, had egg coffee with Quan. Hated to leave him but then Jen comes along. The Sister I never had. A delight. Warm, funny, smart, also snapping fantastic pictures. We didn’t want our time to end but then truly enjoyed Tom for the Mekong Delta. He tried to talk me into snake wine but instead, my daughter ended up with a python around her neck. Good thing I got the travel insurance, ha! In Cambodia, our driver Samdang a man of view words, he let his heart do the talking…practically carried me up the mountain. Our tour guide, Danit was a very special, refreshing candor. Honestly, I wouldn’t have wanted to change a thing or a person about our tour. Except for maybe Pepto Bismol. It took about 6 Pharmacies, but we finally found some! I wore mosquito repellent daily, got two bites. I told my Daughter “only conservative clothes” and I would get the evil eye from her every time a girl passed us wearing shorts. Cash (or the Dong) is king in Vietnam, in Cambodia you are fine with US dollars, in Thailand, it’s the baht. Linh checked in with us almost daily, made special arrangements for my vegan Daughter. With Indochina Voyages, it was an affordable, luxurious, cultural journey that my Daughter and I will treasure always.
