When intact, the site encompassed 70 tower temples and the tombs of King and senior priests. From baked bricks and sandstone, ancient Cham artisans created a large-scale and unique architectural complex. The sophistication of the sandstone and brick bas-reliefs which artisans carved directly into the brick walls still amazes researchers. For over a thousand years, the complex has remained sturdy and the materials used to cement the bricks together still puzzle archeologists
If you are standing at the heart of My Son temple complex- an important religious center, built from the late 4th century. Back in the past, the Champa Kingdom was established in 192 AD. Its first citadel was named Shimhapura- the lion Citadel, 20 km east of here. According to some historical documents, at the end of the 4th century, Champa King chose this valley to build temples for worshipping Hindu pantheons. The decision to choose My Son as the sanctuary received the agreement of following dynasties until the fall of the kingdom. Over a millennium of existence, the kingdom changed it citadel several times, yet My Son Sanctuary remained the central venue for prayers and worships in the Champa kingdom throughout all dynasties. It was regarded the most sacred place in the country. It was where for military prayed for good luck before battles as well as where the triumphant troops would offer their most precious booty to the gods.
