My Son used to be an Indian Holy Land of the Champa Kingdom which is situated in a valley surrounded by imposed hills and spectacular mountains. My Son is well known for its distinctive architecture of a collection of towers built between 7th to 13th centuries.
The interesting thing here is that the complex was made of wood in the 4th century and then reconstructed in brick with unique and mysterious techniques that until now, the way of building this complex remains a hidden secret. My Son complex contains many groups of towers. Each group includes the main tower and the small ones surrounding in which the big one symbolizes the universal center and it is known to be a shrine to worship Siva God. As you might notice, all of the towers in My Son complex is in pyramid shape believed to be the symbol of Meru peak where living Hindu Gods.
These towers are even more impressive to discover due to its exceptional decoration. There are a variety of patterns carved on the wall of each tower which can be flowers, plants, animals symbolizing power such as lions or elephants, Kala Makara, instrumentalists, Apsara dancer, etc. Each of these undoubtedly reveals a meaning itself that need to be explored. The trip to My Son complex guarantees visitors unforgettable experience about architecture, religion and other historical values.
So these are two destinations that you should definitely give it a try if you have an opportunity to visit Quang Nam or Danang. To be honest, if you can’t make it to these beautiful places, it doesn’t count that you have ever come to the Middle of Vietnam.
